Embrace a new way of travel
Tanzania is rarely thought of as a destination for cyclists; even less so the animal filled wildernesses of the Serengeti. But Tanzania cycling Safari is catching on. Cyclists in Tanzania Cycling safari can cover more ground than walking safaris, while getting up close to wildlife and really experiencing being out in this phenomenal landscape. Plus you get to leave the jeeps behind – and experience a sense of freedom.
There is a support vehicle throughout the journey, so when the going gets tough, feel free to hitch a ride, and when it’s time to see wildlife, swap the bike for a jeep or truck. The cycling distances are mostly short, but the roads can be rough, the terrain can be hilly and the climate warm, so you’ll need to be reasonably fit. Some routes are incredibly easy, though, like the long and winding descent into the stunning Great Rift Valley, which you can freewheel all the way.
There is a lot to enjoy off the bike, too, on this 13-day trip. Stroll through farm villages, experience the culture of the Maasai people, roast and grind your own coffee, take a safari in search of the rare black rhino and drift off to sleep surrounded by the creatures of the African plains. The weather in this region varies seasonally. Be prepared to get sweaty, and for the occasional cold day and night, which may require a change of plans. It’s all part of the adventure!
The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are must-visits on any trip to Tanzania, but safaris here are only the beginning. This unique small-group cycling adventure explores the landscapes of Tanzania on two wheels. Pedal far off the beaten track to trails where no cars go, crossing the remote, barely-charted plains of Lengai under misty volcanic peaks and discovering Hemingway’s beloved Lake Manyara and the flamingo-dotted, deep-pink Lake Natron.
