5-Day Ndutu Safari - Witness the Great Migration Calving Season in Tanzania
This 5-day Ndutu safari offers an extraordinary opportunity to witness the birth of thousands of wildebeest calves between January and March, a period when over 8,000 newborns arrive each day. This dramatic season attracts predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, leading to intense predator-prey interactions that make for an unforgettable safari experience.
The Ndutu region, located in the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is the heart of the Great Wildebeest Migration during the calving season.
Ndutu’s open plains and acacia woodlands provide a picturesque setting for game viewing, with off-road driving permitted, allowing close encounters with wildlife. Beyond the wildebeest herds, visitors can expect to see zebras, giraffes, elephants, and a variety of bird species. This safari also includes visits to the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, both world-renowned for their incredible biodiversity. Whether watching a newborn wildebeest take its first steps or witnessing a thrilling chase between a cheetah and its prey, this safari offers a rare glimpse into the raw beauty of nature during one of its most crucial life cycles.
A highlight of this safari is a full-day game drive in Serengeti National Park, where travelers can explore deeper into the migration routes. The Serengeti’s vast savannahs and rolling hills are home to a diverse range of wildlife beyond the migration, including elephants, leopards, hippos, and an array of antelope species. As the sun sets over the golden plains, the landscape transforms into a breathtaking scene of endless beauty, perfect for capturing iconic African safari moments.

The day is dedicated to exploring the vast Ndutu plains, following the migration herds as they give birth to thousands of calves. The open landscape provides excellent opportunities to witness predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas in action as they take advantage of the vulnerable newborns. With off-road game drives permitted, vehicles can get exceptionally close to the herds, offering unmatched photography opportunities. The experience of watching a newborn wildebeest take its first steps and run within minutes of birth is a truly unforgettable sight. After a full day of game viewing, the evening is spent at the lodge or tented camp, sharing stories of the day’s encounters.
Day 3: Tracking Predators and Wildlife Diversity
Another thrilling day in Ndutu starts with an early morning game drive, an ideal time to spot predators on the hunt. The region is home to large prides of lions, elusive leopards resting in the acacia trees, and agile cheetahs scanning the plains for prey. Beyond the migration, the area is rich in other wildlife, including giraffes, elephants, jackals, and numerous bird species. The game drive continues through the woodlands surrounding Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek, where hippos and waterbirds thrive. A midday break at the camp provides a chance to relax before heading out for an afternoon drive to explore different sections of the ecosystem. As the sun sets, the golden light creates a breathtaking scene, perfect for capturing the essence of the African wilderness.
Day 4: Serengeti National Park – The Endless Plains
The journey continues deeper into the Serengeti National Park, following the migration routes toward new grazing grounds. The Serengeti’s vast savannahs and rolling hills offer a different perspective of the migration, with thousands of animals stretching as far as the eye can see. The region is home to diverse wildlife, including elephants, buffalos, and spotted hyenas. A picnic lunch in the heart of the park allows time to soak in the scenery before an afternoon of wildlife tracking. The game drive covers key predator territories, increasing the chances of spotting lions and cheetahs in action. The day ends with a return to Ndutu for a final night under the African sky.
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Safari and Return to Arusha
On the last day, the journey takes a detour to the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. Descending into the crater, visitors are greeted by a thriving ecosystem with an incredible density of animals, including the rare black rhino. The crater floor is home to herds of buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, and predators such as lions and hyenas.
